Yes, And It's Not Solar.

I'll never forget the look on my neighbor Tom's face.

It was 11:47 PM when the transformer blew.

The entire block went dark in an instant. Within minutes, people were stumbling into their driveways.
Flashlights. Candles. Someone's car alarm going off because their garage door opener died mid-close.

Tom knocked on my door around midnight.

"You got power?" he asked, squinting past me into my lit hallway.

I nodded.

"Generator?"

"Something like that."

He stared for a second, then shook his head and walked back to his dark house.
The next morning, I watched him haul his thawed food to the curb. $400 worth of groceries. Gone.

Here's what I never told Tom:
What's running my house isn't what he thinks.

It's not a $6,000 backup generator that guzzles.

It's not $30,000 in solar panels that only work when the sun cooperates.

It's something I built on a Saturday afternoon with $106 worth of parts from the hardware store down the street.
